High efficiency and reliability in being able to supply the state's population with drinking water of outstanding quality is an apt way to describe the water supply industry in Baden-Württemberg. An extremely dense water supply network in our state guarantees the optimum utilization of local water resources as well as essential compensation between areas of water surplus and shortage.
In Baden-Württemberg the lion's share of drinking water is obtained from ground water, but a certain amount is also drawn from rivers (the Danube) and lakes (Lake Constance) and drinking water dams (Little Kinzig).
Reliability of supply, highest water quality and sound economic efficiency are the guiding principles for Baden-Württemberg's water supply industry. This is achieved through amalgamation, qualified personnel, the use of high technical standards and intensive quality assurance, the incorporation of backup safety measures wherever necessary, and comprehensive crisis management.
Water protection has a key role to play in preserving the quality of our drinking water. The aim is to prevent contamination arising in the first place - the redevelopment of water resources is far more expensive than their protection. Preventive measures include prevention strategies, e.g. in industry, transport and agriculture, the special protection of drinking water catchment areas, e.g. by the clear identification of such areas, and the intensive monitoring of water quality. At the same time Baden-Württemberg's waterworks are equipped with high-performance treatment technology able to combat contamination reliably and economically should this be necessary in spite of the comprehensive water protection measures.
Solutions have been jointly developed to ensure a water supply system of high technical standard yet low cost. In Baden-Württemberg you will find systems of all magnitudes and technologies for the collection, treatment, distribution of water and waste water treatment.
